Illinois Jacquet was an American tenor saxophonist whose electrifying 1942 solo on "Flying Home" helped define the honking, blues-drenched sound of R&B saxophone. Known for his powerful tone and showmanship, he was a fixture in jazz and blues from the 1940s through the 1990s, leading his own bands and performing with Jazz at the Philharmonic.
