Jesse KuchProgressive HouseJesse Kuch is a journalist, DJ and founder of pioneering label Open Records, one of Australia’s most celebrated and enduring electronic music imprints.
Across more than two decades, Jesse has balanced a high-level media career with managing Open and a constant presence at the country's most significant outdoor and club events. His work has been instrumental in bringing Australia’s distinct and vibrant sound to a global audience through more than 60 releases, including his own influential compilations Slow-Release, Festivus and Expansion Pack II.
Along the way, he’s performed everywhere from major clubs in Japan to mainstage slots at Australia’s premier festivals, including Rainbow Serpent, Earth Frequency, Subsonic, Strawberry Fields, PURE, Eclipse 2012, Elements, Paradigm, Rabbits Eat Lettuce and Chi Wow Wah Town, plus support duties for a long list of international luminaries.
The chaos of 2020 proved to be a watershed year for the Brisbane-based tastemaker. Not only did Open top the Beatport charts with John Baptiste & Amuze’s breakout release Time Machine, but Jesse launched his own production career as Boy With Kuch with a stellar remix of Thankyou City’s classic Nothin’ But Chi in collaboration with fellow Brisbane innovator Will Olsen (Time Before Eyes).
Supported by heavyweights like Hernan Cattaneo, Blond:ish, Jamie Stevens and Eli & Fur, Boy With Kuch have since followed their Nothin’ But Chi remix up with reworks for Melbourne’s Tonelab on Open and UK icon James Monro for US label Proton Music.
With the 20th anniversary of Open Records fast approaching and his time in the studio starting to bear fruit, Jesse continues to build on a legacy that has helped define Australian electronic music culture at-large.
