Possessed are a pioneering American extreme metal band from San Francisco, widely credited as one of the earliest death metal acts, predating the genre's mainstream emergence. Their 1985 debut album *Seven Churches* is considered a landmark record, blending thrash metal aggression with brutal, downtuned riffs and Jeff Becerra's guttural vocals.
