Meredith Music Festival
The very first Meredith. Two days of non-stop music set in the rolling green hills of Meredith, an hour and a half from Melbourne, on December 14 and 15, 1991. A small but die-hard core of around 250 people drove out, pitched tents and enjoyed a weekend of free living, bring-your-own and no curfews. No grotty carpet, no bar queues, no taxi fares home. The bill featured The Boxing Tostadas, Dead Salesmen, Kill Sarah, Flamenco Sketches, The Celts, Picko and many more, kicking off at 6.30pm on the Saturday. The organisers did not really consider that the sun would go down, so there were basically no lights, and no one had thought much about food, so a few locals jumped on the barbeques, the first iteration of what would become the Meredith Community Tucker Tent. A Celtic band played through the night and Sunday brought an impromptu jam session that ran hours longer than planned. Nobody wanted to leave. It was idyllic, and the seed of everything Meredith would become.
